Satirical cartoon by Thomas Nast, from Harper’s Weekly, August 19, 1871. Victorian society was shocked by the publication in 1859 of Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species and in 1871 of his Descent of Man, both of which seemed to indicate that man was descended from the apes. Here the artist puts all the dismay into the mouth of the “defrauded” ape.
